The ADA recommends brushing your teeth twice a day with ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush will not do a good job of cleaning your teeth. Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Decay-causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can't reach. This helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line. Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks. Our Doctors strongly suggests visiting regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.
Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Your gum tissue is not attached to the teeth as high as it may seem. There is a very shallow v-shaped crevice called a sulcus between the tooth and gums. Periodontal diseases attack just below the gum line in the sulcus, where they cause the attachment of the tooth and its supporting tissues to break down. As the tissues are damaged, the sulcus develops into a pocket; generally, the more severe the disease, the greater the depth of the pocket.
Periodontal diseases are classified according to the severity of the disease. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that only affects the gums. Gingivitis may lead to more serious, destructive forms of periodontal disease called periodontitis. At Heritage Hill Dental, we use a scaling technique to remove calculus and plaque that is causing the infection of the gums.
Much information can be gained through a systematic evaluation of your teeth and soft tissues. While the primary objective is to distinguish between health and disease, a comprehensive oral examination in conjunction with a thorough medical and dental history can also provide valuable insight into the overall health and well-being of the patient.
Dental x-rays are a necessity for diagnosing disorders in your mouth, such as tooth decay, gum disease, and the maintenance of your oral health. Without x-rays, Dr. Lieto and Dr. Weny will not be able to find early problems in your mouth that are apparent by no other means. If these problems are not detected early, they can develop into much larger difficulties for you that could create discomfort, more extensive treatment and more expense.
Our Grand Rapids Dentists have recent good news about progress against cancer. It is now easier than ever to detect oral cancer early, when the opportunity for a cure is great. Only half of all patients diagnosed with oral cancer survive more than five years. Dr. Weny and Dr. Lieto have the skills and tools to ensure that early signs of cancer and pre-cancerous conditions are identified.
Dentists have used Dental Sealants to help protect the oral health of children and adults. Dental sealants act as a barrier, protecting the teeth against decay-causing bacteria. The sealants are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where decay occurs most often.
